Guarding the past, for the future.
Our Story
About Us
Rehutai Museum is a heritage conservation project located on Rehutai Farm, overlooking Menzies Bay on Banks Peninsula. The museum preserves and showcases significant architectural features salvaged from the original Rehutai Homestead, a historic dwelling built in 1894 by John Henry Menzies. He was a remarkable but largely unheralded New Zealander — a polymath, a farmer, carver, cabinet maker, writer and artist.
Following the careful recovery of the homestead's ornate hallway, carved timberwork and original fireplaces, a purpose-built museum was constructed on the original site. Completed in 2023, the museum provides visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the history of Rehutai, Menzies Bay, and the people who shaped this special corner of Banks Peninsula.
The museum stands as a celebration of local heritage, craftsmanship and conservation by the Cotter Family, ensuring that the story of Rehutai continues to be shared for generations to come.
